5 Ways to Encourage Your Child to Read

Create a welcoming reading environment.
Make sure your child has a cozy and inviting spot in the house to read; somewhere well-lit that is comfortable with pillows. Minimize distraction by turning off the television.

Be a reading role model for your child.
A child is more likely to read if they see others reading. You may even want to designate a time for family reading where the whole family sits down and reads together.

Find books that your child is interested in.
When searching for a book at the library, ask the librarian to pick out books from certain categories that they like. There are also websites that have books by genres. Reading rockets has a great list.

Help children choose the right books for their skill level.
An easy way to check to see if a child is reading above their level is the five-finger method. Ask your child to read a page aloud. As they read the page aloud listen to see if they make any mistakes by keeping track on your fingers. If they miss more than five words, then the book is probably too difficult for them.

Make reading a reward, not a chore.
Allow reading to be a treat. If they are reading at night, allow them to stay up a few minutes extra.
